Year 8

8EA3! Here is your learning for today! (If it is Thursday 9th July)

Today you are going to produce an instructional guide to a piece of software. The software is Photostory3 and is located on the programs list. Your job is to produce a Photostory that guides the viewer through how to use the software. Imagine a word document that tells you all about the functions of word, or a mindmap that you can follow step by step in order to make your own.

You should create as many slides as you need but the video should not last longer than two minutes. As there are only about 6 key stages in Photostory you will probably need about 10 slides. The theme is ‘what is important to me’. I want to leave this as open as possible for you to explore what interests you, through your choice of images.

The finished result will be a WMV file (because that’s what Photostory3 files have to become in order to be watched) that will contain instructions typed onto each slide or spoken out loud and recorded (see below), including suggestions e.g. “Here’s a star wipe! Select ‘transitions’ to create your own” or ”In this slide I’ve faded the image so that text can be seen more clearly.”

I am very keen that you know how to add music and use the podcasting facilities. You will need to use them in next week’s lesson and there will be little time to learn during the lesson. You will have completed the guide if you include an explanation and demonstration of these facilities. Use the headphones available.

Ensure that you convert your file to a WMV and include instructions for this.

The file you create should be carefully uploaded to the RE department wiki site (at the topd of the y8 page). You have until Monday morning to achieve this. Make sure you save the file with your name in the file name e.g MrMaddisonphotostory.WMV. You must check that your file ahs successfully uploaded and includes your name. This will form a register of submission. If you work hard you will complete this during the lesson. Get started!

Year 8 IAR2:  Buddhism and Suffering

In this assessment you are going to use your skills of evaluation. In each of the below four statements consider whether you agree or disagree and explain your view. You then need to think about the other side of the argument and explain why somebody might think differently to yourself.

Each answer is worth 4 marks; 2 marks for your opinion (well explained) and 2 marks for a well-explained view, opposing your own.

1.      “Life would be great if there was suffering.”

2.      “All happiness is caused by human craving/ wanting.”

3.      “Many people blame God for suffering when the majority of suffering in this world is caused by humans.”

4.      “Modern life causes more suffering than easing it.”

Total:  16 marks

Welcome year 8!

Buddhism Lesson 3 Week 15 - The Auspicious Birth and Remarkable Life of Siddartha Gautama - The Buddha

IAR 2 Homework over Christmas holidays - for week 15 you should have completed the first of these 4 questions. Open the file below to find out the remaining 3. Complete for the first lesson back after the holidays - Enjoy your break!

Lesson 1 - week 13

Meditation - Guest Buddhist

Local ordained Buddhist Aryacitta will be visiting lessons to conduct meditation sessions. Meditation is a key part of Buddhism and Hinduism and has recently become very popular in Western society for the relief of stress and in helping people to focus. There is nothing necessarily religious about the practice (in the same way that there is nothing religious about giving to charity, even though it forms part of many religions). An important general point might be made here about how religious practices are based on logic and practicalities whereas beliefs are based on something else.

The meditation we shall be doing is called Samatha and concerns self-awareness. During the meditation you will aim to empty your mind of the day to day distractions and focus on being aware of yourself and your existance. I am sure that Aryacitta will tell you why this is important for everybody but perhaps you might like to think about what purpose it miught serve for you. You might also like to think about what sort of questions you might ask him.

Aryacitta gives meditation classes at Shambala studios in Leigh every Saturday
